Why Sustainable Gifting Matters in the UAE and Qatar

Sustainability is now part of how Gulf organisations are judged. Environmental development is one of the four pillars of Qatar National Vision 2030, the UAE named 2023 its Year of Sustainability and hosted COP28 at Expo City Dubai, and both countries have banned single-use plastic shopping bags. Companies with ESG reporting, government contracts or international partners increasingly want their gifts to match those commitments.

The most sustainable gift is one that is used for years and replaces something disposable. A steel bottle that replaces plastic water bottles, or a cotton tote that replaces shopping bags, does more good than a novelty item made from a green-sounding material and thrown away a week later.

What the Common Eco Materials Actually Are

Knowing the materials helps you choose items you can describe honestly to your stakeholders.

• rPET: polyester made from recycled PET plastic bottles. It looks and performs like ordinary polyester and is used for bags, lanyards and textiles.
• Bamboo: a fast-growing grass that regrows from its roots after harvest. Used for desk items, pens and tech casings, and it laser engraves cleanly.
• Cork: harvested from the bark of the cork oak without cutting the tree down. Light, water resistant and warm to the touch, used for notebook covers and coasters.
• Organic and recycled cotton: organic cotton is grown without synthetic pesticides and fertilisers; recycled cotton reuses fibre from textile waste.
• Wheat straw composites: plant fibre mixed with plastic. They contain less virgin plastic, but they are not plastic-free, so describe them accurately.

How to Avoid Greenwashing

Only make the claim the product can support. If an item is described as recycled, ask for the material certificate for that specific product, such as the Global Recycled Standard (GRS) for recycled textiles or FSC certification for paper. We share the manufacturer's documents for any item before you order, and we will tell you when a product has no certificate rather than let you print a claim you cannot back up.

Packaging counts too. Ask for plastic-free packing, kraft boxes instead of plastic sleeves, and bulk delivery rather than individually wrapped items where the gift is handed out in person.

Branding That Suits Natural Materials

Laser engraving is the natural fit for bamboo, cork and wood. It burns the logo into the surface with no ink, from 25 pieces, in 5 to 10 working days after artwork approval. Fabric items such as rPET bags and cotton totes are screen printed or embroidered. A single-colour logo in a muted or natural tone tends to look best on eco materials.
