How deboss / emboss works, step by step

Die making
A metal die is cut from your logo. This is a one-time cost per logo and size.

Setup
Heat, dwell time and pressure are tuned to the specific material thickness.

Press
The heated die is pressed into each cover, either recessed (deboss) or raised (emboss).

Inspect
Depth and position are checked piece by piece — leather varies more than paper.
Debossing & Embossing: common questions
What is the difference between debossing and embossing?
Debossing presses the logo down into the surface; embossing pushes it up out of the surface. Debossing is the more common choice on leather notebooks and diaries because it is more forgiving on soft materials and holds detail better.
Can you add gold foil to a debossed logo?
Yes — foil stamping uses the same die with a foil ribbon, giving a metallic gold, silver or coloured mark instead of a blind impression. It costs more per unit than blind debossing but reads considerably more premium on dark covers.
Is there a setup cost for embossing?
Yes, a one-time die charge per logo per size. Reorders in the same design and size reuse the existing die with no further setup, and we keep dies on file.
