Signage for Retail and Office Fit-Outs: A Practical Planning Guide
Most signage problems trace back to skipping a step: choosing a material before confirming placement, or ordering production before checking whether the install needs approval. This guide walks the planning order that avoids a costly reprint.
Start with placement, not material
Indoor and outdoor placement have different requirements before you even get to aesthetics. Outdoor signage needs UV-stable material and weatherproofing for GCC heat and sun exposure; indoor signage has more material freedom but needs to account for lighting conditions — backlit acrylic reads very differently under fluorescent office lighting versus natural light near a window.
Confirm exact placement and dimensions on-site before finalising material — a design that looks right on screen can be the wrong scale or wrong finish once it's actually mounted on the wall or shopfront it's meant for.
Matching material to use case
Acrylic and Dibond (aluminium composite) panels are the standard for durable indoor and outdoor signs with a clean, professional finish. Backlit acrylic with LED modules works well for reception and shopfront branding where you want the sign to stand out after dark. Foam board is a lower-cost option for temporary indoor signage — not built for long-term or outdoor use. Vinyl-applied wall and glass graphics are the cheapest way to brand a large surface without the cost of a rigid panel.
Approvals — budget the time, not just the production
Outdoor shopfront and building signage in most GCC jurisdictions typically requires landlord and/or municipality approval before installation. This is the step most likely to blow a timeline if it's not started early — approval can take longer than production itself. Start the approval process in parallel with design, not after production is already finished.
