Business Gift Etiquette in the UAE and Qatar: What to Give and What to Avoid

Gifts Gulf Team Published 28 October 2026· 7 min read

Gift-giving is part of how business relationships are built in the UAE and Qatar. A thoughtful gift signals respect and long-term intent; a careless one can embarrass the person receiving it. The rules are not complicated, and most of them come down to respecting Islamic customs, the mix of nationalities in a Gulf workplace, and the policies of the organisation on the other side.

Gifts That Are Always Welcome

Quality matters more than size. Gifts that are useful every day and carry a discreet logo are the safest choice for clients and senior contacts across the Gulf.

  • Premium dates and Arabic coffee sets, especially around Ramadan and Eid.
  • Leather or vegan-leather notebooks, card holders and desk accessories.
  • Insulated drinkware, which is used every day in the Gulf climate.
  • Quality pens, engraved rather than printed for senior recipients.
  • Oud or bakhoor-inspired fragrance sets from reputable brands.
  • Tech accessories such as power banks and wireless chargers.

What to Avoid

Some items are inappropriate in any Gulf business setting, and a few are restricted by law.

  • Alcohol, and anything branded with or shaped like alcohol products.
  • Pork products, including gelatine-based sweets, unless clearly certified halal.
  • Images of people or animals on gifts for conservative recipients, and anything with religious imagery from another faith.
  • Very personal items such as perfume chosen for a recipient of the opposite gender you do not know well.
  • Overly expensive gifts that create an obligation, especially for public-sector contacts.

How to Present a Gift

Offer and receive gifts with the right hand, or with both hands; using the left hand alone is considered impolite across the Arab world. Presentation matters: a good box, a short handwritten card and clean branding make a mid-priced item feel considered. In many offices gifts are opened in private rather than in front of the giver, so do not be surprised if a gift is set aside to open later.

Timing: Ramadan, Eid and National Days

Ramadan is the most important gifting season in both countries. Gifts are usually delivered before or during the first part of the month, not on Eid itself, when offices are closed. Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin around 8 February, so orders for branded Ramadan gifts should be confirmed in December. UAE National Day falls on 2 December and Qatar National Day on 18 December, and both are strong moments for client appreciation gifts in national colours.

Government and Semi-Government Recipients

Public-sector employees in both countries work under codes of conduct that limit the gifts they can accept, and many entities require anything beyond a token item to be declared or returned. Rules differ between federal, emirate-level and semi-government organisations, so the practical approach is to ask the recipient's procurement or compliance team, keep public-sector gifts to low-value branded items, and never time a gift around a live tender.

Mixed Teams: One Gift for Many Cultures

Most Gulf workforces include dozens of nationalities. For company-wide gifts, choose items that work for everyone, such as drinkware, bags, tech or stationery, and keep festival-specific gifts (Diwali sweets, Christmas hampers, Lunar New Year gifts) for the teams and clients who celebrate them.
