Getting the spec right for burger boxes

  1. 1

    Size to the actual product

Measure your finished burger or sandwich. A box that is slightly too large is the most common cause of food arriving collapsed.

  2. 2

    Decide on venting

Vent holes let steam escape so fried food stays crisp. Skip them and a 20-minute delivery arrives soggy.

  3. 3

    Pick board weight

Heavier board resists grease and crushing but costs more per unit and ships heavier. Match it to how far the food travels.

  4. 4

Set up artwork with a dieline

Artwork must be laid out on the box dieline, not designed flat, so nothing important lands on a fold or a glue flap.

Custom Burger Boxes & Clamshells: common questions

What is the minimum order for custom printed burger boxes?

Usually 5,000–10,000 per size for a printed run. Where a brand is testing a new item, a stock kraft clamshell with a printed sticker or belly band gets you branded packaging at a far lower commitment — a sensible first step before committing to tooling.

Should burger boxes be vented?

For anything fried, yes. Vents let steam out so the coating stays crisp during delivery. For cold or dry items venting is unnecessary and slightly weakens the box, so it is a decision per product rather than a default.

Kraft or white board for burger boxes?

Kraft reads artisanal and hides grease marks better, and it is usually cheaper. White board gives brighter, more accurate colour reproduction and suits brands with a bold colour identity. Both take print — it is a brand decision, not a quality one.
